No-Limit Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker competitor in the world by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn whatever he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the negative comments from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
He started competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he destroyed many of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an undying love for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every single day and is quite abashed about his achievements. He admits to making mistakes every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Although Phil has won some big tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.
