Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker player on the globe by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. He routinely would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the adverse comments from others annihilate his goal of becoming one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He started competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a regular outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an eternal passion for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and always strives to improve.
Even though Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a regular basis.
