Internet Big Stakes Poker- Who is Gus Hansen?

Gus Hansen had an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only participant to achieve final table in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Gus secured a large pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the greatest enthusiasts in the world. While competing in internet poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. He frequently plays in the 200/400 NL max buy in of $40, 000. Gus usually buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all-in. I accept that Hansen is a great poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is flat broke, he has no reason to sit at the game with the minimum buy-in.

Buying in for the min takes a majority of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be one of the greatest poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full amount. I believe tv can alter our perception of the real world sometimes. The greatest players anywhere in the world might be players you have never heard of before. Gus can be seen gambling on online poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in high stakes omaha hi-low and texas holdem. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in cash games?
